Families Volunteering Together

A volunteering family is one who spends time together, shares ideas together, and cares together. There are plenty of ways for a family to volunteer together during the first months of the year.

  • Valentine’s Day – Spend some time at a local hobby store and find some crafts that your family can do together. Once home, make decorations and Valentine ’s Day crafts that you can give to the elderly, disabled, sick, or disadvantaged children in your area. Help brighten someone’s day and spread your love on Valentine’s Day.

  • President’s Day – Spend time researching our past presidents at your local library. Learn about the contributions made by some of our Country’s great leaders including Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, or Ronald Reagan. Put together a puppet show for local preschool children and teach them what you and your family just learned.

  • Saint Patrick’s Day – Sponsor a Saint Patrick’s Day Party for low income children in your community. Have everyone wear green and create a Saint Patrick’s Day craft.

  • First Day of Spring – Host a spring festival/party for your local nursing home to celebrate the end of winter. Use styrofoam cups and seeds to give to local residents and help bring the feeling of spring into their room.

  • Spring Cleaning – Go through your family’s closets and give away clothes that are too small or that you no longer want to wear. Donate them to Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, or a local needy family in your area.

  • Earth Day – On the first warm day of spring, have your family go down to the local lake, park, or cemetery with trash bags and rakes in hand. Take a few hours to pick up trash, rake up debris, or even plant flowers to help beautify a public area just in time for spring.

Whatever you do, make sure you invite your entire family. Teach your children the need for their involvement in your community while creating memories to last a lifetime.
